My Facebook NewsFeed has been inundated with friends taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge lately. I'm sure you've seen it. It's where someone dumps a bucket of ice water on their head to raise awareness about ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease. If a person doesn't take the challenge, they are asked to donate money to the cause. Our colleagues at Live Like Lou have to be happy with the amount of attention and money that's been raised in such a short time. Especially for a disease that's somewhat rare and that has no cure.
As a marketer, I've been inspired with how quickly and passionately this effort has taken off. Who knew that dumping a bucket of ice water on your head would inspire a movement? It's everywhere. Everyday people, celebrities, politicians, athletes, you name it. And to to think most people probably never heard of ALS at the beginning of summer. We in the pediatric cancer fighting world face the same challenge regarding awareness and money, just like ALS did prior to going . In particular, Osteosarcoma. That's why we continue to fight to the good fight, so to speak.
So, I ask you, how to we gain a bigger stage? How do we bring the level of awareness of Osteosarcoma to that of the ALS Challenge? Tell us below and maybe we'll use your idea for an upcoming marketing campaign. No idea is off the table.
In the meantime, do two things. Take five minutes and donate 22 dollars to the Andy B. Fund and enjoy Jimmy Fallon taking the Ice Bucket Challenge.
